Many web hosting companies have tried to counteract the polluting effects of our industry by using clean energy. We salute them, but we believe planting trees is a more efficient and effective means of reducing carbon dioxide.

According to a report in Science magazine (The global tree restoration potential, July 5, 2019), new trees covering areas totaling the size of the United States would cut atmospheric CO2 by 25 percent. What are we waiting for? We aren’t waiting, we’re planting! Join us, and we’ll put 20 percent of what you spend towards trees.

Hosting Forest has more than 20 years’ experience with IT, hosting and Cleantech/circular economy. We know the internet isn’t going away anytime soon, and we’re dedicated to offsetting the effects on our environment. We want to help you do the same.

How does it work?

When you buy your hosting from us, we donate 20 percent of the full amount of your hosting purchase to one of four climate-focused non-profit organizations. Two of the organizations plant trees. We’re also donating to nonprofits focused on renewable energy and on offsetting carbon emissions. Every month, we donate 20 percent of that month’s turnover to these organizations.

At present, we are giving to the following organizations:

What’s in it for you?

To be clear, we are not a nonprofit. We are a business dedicated to web hosting. But we are also a business determined to help the earth by doing what we can to reduce atmospheric CO2, and we want to make it easy for our customers to do the same.

Hosting Forest Supports COTAP, Offsetting Carbon to Alleviate Poverty

COTAP — Carbon Offsets To Alleviate Poverty — was founded in 2011 by Tim Whitley, who aimed to change the lives of smallholder farmers while addressing climate change. Headquartered in Oakland, California, COTAP is an American public charity, or 501(c)(3).

COTAP empowers individuals in developing countries to tackle climate change and fight poverty. The method is simple, and in line with Hosting Forest’s own environmental philanthropy: plant new trees in developing countries. The trees reduce C02 emissions, limiting climate change, and undertaking the forestry projects with a local workforce delivers revenue into economically vulnerable local communities.

Individuals Can Contribute Directly to COTAP

One of the characteristics we really like about COTAP is the ability of individuals to contribute. Via cotap.org, anyone can donate directly to the organization, contributing to their effort to plant new trees. Those using our services also contribute! We donate 20 percent to COTAP and similar organizations.
However you choose to support, we encourage you to consider COTAP next time you make a gift.

Carbon Footprint Calculator

To help individuals track their personal carbon footprint, COTAP has created a carbon footprint calculator. You enter your transportation use, electricity use, gas use, oil use, propane use and more, and learn your own footprint. Once you know, you can donate that amount to COTAP to offset your use.

Fight Climate Change and Poverty

Hosting Forest truly appreciates COTAP’s work in fighting climate change and reducing poverty. We hope all our readers — those who use our services and those who don’t — will be inspired to contribute as well.

Choose Hosting Forest and Support One Tree Planted

The non-profit organization One Tree Planted was founded in 2014 by Matt Hill in Shelburne, Vermont, USA. Hill started the organization to plant trees, with the goal of lowering CO2 emissions. One Tree Planted’s method is simple: Collaborate with reforestation partners around the world to plant trees.

A Small, Effective Team

Since 2014, One Tree Planted has more than doubled the number of trees they plant each year. In 2018, the organization planted more than 1.3 million trees around the world. In 2019, they expect to triple that number — that’s 4 million trees! And since the organization is so small, a majority of donor contributions actually go to planting.

One Dollar Buys One Tree

For every U.S. dollar the organization receives, it will plant one tree. Donors can choose the location from four continents: the United States, Asia, South America and Africa.

Why One Tree Planted?

Hosting Forest chooses to give to One Tree Planted because of the mission — planting trees — but also because of the simplicity and transparency of the organization.

We encourage you to donate to One Tree Planted, either through a hosting subscription with Hosting Forest or via your own individual gift. We applaud your dedication to planting more trees.

Thor Heyerdahl Climate Park Plants Mangroves, Reduces CO2

Another climate-friendly initiative Hosting Forest supports is the Thor Heyerdahl Climate Park in Myanmar. The initiative was begun in 2012 as a research project undertaken by Norwegian journalist/politician/activist Dr. Arne Fjørtoft and the Myanmar-based Worldview International Foundation, in cooperation with several universities based in Myanmar. The project comprises a 1,800-acre mangrove restoration park, which will mitigate 2.7 million tons of CO2, shield coastal communities against severe weather, and create jobs/reduce poverty.

The project is named after Thor Heyerdahl, a much-admired Norwegian explorer and ethnographer who undertook a number of expeditions between the 1930s and 1970s.

Mangrove Trees in Myanmar

Mangrove trees are powerful climate warriors. Studies suggest the trees can be up to four times more effective than rainforests in reducing CO2. On the flip site, cutting down mangroves causes massive release of CO2 into the atmosphere. By planting new mangrove trees in a way that strengthens the local economy and benefits local communities, the Thor Heyerdahl Climate Park initiative can not only increase the mangrove population, but also discourage further de-forestation.

CO2 Reduction … and More

Planting mangrove trees in Myanmar not only reduces atmospheric CO2, but also affords many additional benefits to local communities and ecosystems. Mangroves are the only trees that grow in salt water, and are uniquely positioned to buffer coastlines and coastal communities during severe weather events. Their roots filter polluted water, which helps protect both sea grasses and coral reefs. Mangroves also play a crucial role in providing habitat for a variety of fish species upon which locals rely for food and livelihood.

Take Action!

More than 35 percent of the world’s mangroves have been lost, and in the Delta Region of Myanmar, only 16 percent of the original grove land remains. Since the Thor Heyerdahl Climate Park initiative began, more than 5 million mangroves have been planted in Myanmar; by next year, the organization hopes this number reaches as high as 9 million.
Hosting Forest is grateful to the initiative for their great work, and is dedicated to supporting them now and in the future.
